UWE included in pre-games guide for 2012 Paralympics

The University of the West of England, Bristol Centre for Sport is delighted to announce that the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games (LOCOG) has selected the Centre for Sport to be included in the pre-games training camp guide for the 2012 Olympics for Paralympic sports. The sports that UWE will be included in the guide to host include Football Five-a-side, Football Seven-a-side, Goalball, Paralympic Table Tennis, Volleyball (sitting), and Wheelchair Fencing.
The University has already been selected for inclusion in the pre-games training camp guide for the 2012 Olympic Games for the sports of Fencing, Badminton, Basketball, Hockey, Table Tennis, Volleyball and Wrestling
Stuart Vanstone, Head of Sport at UWE said, “This is great news and a reflection on the fantastic work that has been done by all the team at the Centre for Sport. Our preparation work to host Olympic and Paralympic teams in the build up to 2012 is well under way and we are confident that we will host national Olympic committees in the build up to the games.
“I hope that 2012 will enable the University to create a sustainable legacy with the countries that we host in the build up to the games. We are working closely with Team South West, Team West of England and a network of partners to deliver opportunities in sport, business, community and cultural engagement.
“The sporting facilities supported by the on-site accommodation and hospitality services make UWE an ideal venue for a Paralympic training venue. We will work closely with all Paralympic associations to ensure that we are able to accommodate each of their requirements and enable them to acclimatise and compete in 2012 at the highest level.”
The Centre for Sport is built to a very high specification and is able to accommodate international training camps and competition. The sports hall is an eight court wooden sprung main hall with under floor heating and a nine metre roof clearance and has England Badminton approved ventilation for no shuttle interference. The walls are painted 'Badminton Blue' and the hall has 700 lux lighting capability. UWE's Centre for Sport has already been host to numerous junior England Badminton events. Spectator seating will be installed for approximately 500 spectators for the UK School Games.
UWE's Centre for Sport is also home to one of the finest hockey facilities in the United Kingdom. As a key partner in the National Hockey Performance Centre Network and a home for a Junior Performance Centre, UWE Bristol is a key stake holder in the delivery of sport in its widest sense within the West of England.
