Glasgow's gaelic name means 'dear green place' It developed in the 18th Century as a result of its port being used for Transatlantic trade with America. It developed a reputatino for shipbuilding and Engineering.
Sitting on the River Clyde, it is the largest City in Scotland. It is a European Centre for Business and Finance and is starting to boost its Tourism trade.
News
On 9th November 2007, it was announced that Glasgow is to host the 2014 Commonwealth Games. There will be a new campus at the East End of the City with an Arena, a velodrome and accommodation facilities.
Hampden Park football ground is to host some of the London 2012 Summer Olympic football tournaments.
